Asahibashi is a steel arch bridge over the Ishikari River. It took its present form in 1932, and it is both the city’s symbol and a Hokkaido Heritage site.[1][9][15]
The first Asahibashi went up in 1904. Asahikawa is a city of rivers: 140 of them flow through it, crossed by more than 750 bridges.[1][15]
On the opening night of the Summer Festival, in late July or early August, the Dōshin Fireworks go up from the Ishikari riverbank by the bridge.[34]
Even Asappy, the city mascot, wears the bridge: his belt is Asahibashi.[60]
