History
A little history 地区のなりたち
Before the mergers of 1955 to 1971, Asahikawa covered only 42.7 km². Hokkaido created Asahikawa Village here on 20 September 1890, together with Kamui and Nagayama. It became a town in 1900, a ward in 1914 and a city on 1 August 1922.[3][4][1]
The railway arrived in 1898, and in 1901 the army’s 7th Division moved its headquarters here. After the war, Shidan-dōri (“Division Street”) was renamed Heiwa-dōri (“Peace Street”). Today the center holds the station and the Kitasaito area, the Heiwa-dōri mall, the Sanroku nightlife district, Tokiwa Park and Asahibashi.[1][3][2]
