Asahiyama Zoo opened in 1967. It is known for what it calls behavioral exhibits: enclosures where animals swim, climb and hunt the way they would in the wild.[2][6]
- Penguin house
- Polar bear houses
- Seal house
The penguin house, the polar bear houses and the African habitat zone are the landmarks. The seal house, opened in 2004, has a distinctive tank that helped make the zoo famous. In July and August 2004 the zoo drew more visitors than any other zoo in Japan, and attendance peaked at 3.07 million in FY2007.[6][7][1]
Winter: the penguin walk
冬の名物、ペンギンの散歩When snow lies on the ground, the penguins go for a daily walk through the zoo. It began as exercise for the birds and became a popular winter event.[7]
