Heiwa-dōri Kaimono Kōen opened in 1972 as Japan’s first permanent pedestrian shopping street.[2]
The street used to be called Shidan-dōri, “Division Street”, and was renamed Heiwa-dōri, “Peace Street”, after the war.[1]
In early February it hosts the Ice Sculpture World Contest, and in mid-September the Tabe Marche food festival runs the whole way from JR Asahikawa Station to the mall. The Summer Festival brings a citizens’ dance parade too (rained out in 2026).[2][35][34][69]
