The museum is housed in the former Asahikawa Kaikōsha, a club for army officers. The building was named an Important Cultural Property in 1989, and the museum opened inside it in 1994.[15][1]
Asahikawa was an army town: in 1901 the headquarters of the Imperial Army’s 7th Division moved here from Sapporo.[1]
The city has awarded the Nakahara Teijirō Prize for sculpture since 1970, and outdoor sculptures stand all over town.[1][4]
