Asahiyama Zoo opened in 1967 and is Japan’s northernmost zoo. It is known for “behavioral exhibits”, which let you watch animals swim, climb and hunt as they would in the wild.[2][6]
Look for the penguin house, the polar bear houses and the African habitat zone. The seal house, opened in 2004, has a distinctive tank that helped make the zoo famous. In July and August 2004 the zoo drew more visitors than any other zoo in Japan.[6][7][1]
When snow lies on the ground, the penguins go for a walk every day. It began as exercise for the birds and is now a popular winter event. In early February there is also a special winter event, the Snow-light Zoo, and in mid-August the zoo stays open into the evening as the Night Zoo.[7][31]
